The 2008 Salmon Crisis
| |
|---|---|
What's This About? |
With crises in 2006 & 2007 and returns of chinook salmon at disappointing lows, wheels were set in motion. Now, Sacramento River chinook are at all time lows prompting fisheries managers to take more restrictive measures for 2008 instigating widespread closures in California, Oregon and Washington. This isn't about if you'll get to fish for salmon this year. This is about what we're not doing and what we should be doing to insure the long term health and sustainability of all anadromous fish salmon, steelhead and trout for today and future generations. |
What's Being Done? |
Government officials are still scratching their heads and sitting on their hands. Their solution is to close the fishery rather than to address the ecological issues that have led to the evolution of this issue. In any case, it's not one that will go away this year, next or the one after. We need a new and more global approach. |
Global Climate Change
| |
|---|---|
What's This About? |
Scientists waited a long time to declare that global warming is real. And they waited even longer to declare that it's the result of human activities. And they are still waiting to announce what is becoming increasingly obvious: It isn't going to take nearly as long as had been expected for profound changes to take place. |
What's Being Done? |
Not nearly enough. |
Marine Reserves in Oregon?
| |
|---|---|
What's This About? |
Sound science should determine how, where, and the size, any marine reserve should be. Will these be the mini hatcheries of the ocean? Who will manage Marine Reserves and, more importantly, where will the funding come from?
Recreational and commercial fishers, surfers, SCUBA divers, beachcombers, kayakers, birders, nature and animal lovers, and environmentalist are very interested in learning more. You should be too! Public awareness is critical to dispel all the myth and hype. We are focused on this issue and will attempt to educate you on relevant information surrounding the establishment of marine reserves in Oregon's Territorial Sea. |
What's Being Done? |
The Association is actively participating in the process with the Ocean Policy Advisory Council (OPAC), SeaGrant/OSU, other fishing and conservation groups as well as your legislators. Follow this Action Center and OPAC's Marine Reserves Working Group to stay abreast. |
Protecting Protected (ESA) Fish - End Non-Selective Harvest
| |
|---|---|
What's This About? |
Non-Selective fishery: Any method of fishing where wild or non-targeted fish cannot be released unharmed. How long will we continue to allow the take of these endangered species? |
What's Being Done? |
With our many partners, the Association has been a vocal partner in this campaign for years. Members and interested anglers are encouraged to participate in the process. |
What Should You Do? |

Protecting & Saving Salmon - Wild and Put & Take
| |
|---|---|
What's This About? |
The salmon of the Pacific and Northwest are at all time low numbers. Poor ocean conditions and a lack of upwelling bringing nourishment to the salmon smolts as they depart from rivers into the ocean is taking a major toll. Poor irrigation practices in California have, once again, caused severe economic impacts to their surrounding states. When will we find parity between conservation and agriculture? |
What's Being Done? |
With our many partners, including Save our Wild Salmon, the Association has been a vocal partner for years. Members and interested anglers are encouraged to participate in the process. |
