Salem Chapter
Here's Just a Few Reasons You Might Like to be a Member
The Salem Chapter is very involved in many different activities including:
Hosting numerous fishing events for regular members and good programs for our monthly meetings held at the Salem Library. Guests are always welcome.
During summer months (July & August), the chapter holds its meeting on the river for fishing, potluck, fishing clinic and / or clean-up activities starting at 5 pm. Frequent locations are Minto Park and the North Santiam State Park (mile post 26 betweeen Mehama and Mill City on Hwy 22.)
Chapter home waters are the North Santiam, and their adopted coastal water is the Nestucca River. Ongoing projects are: Minto Park - a Marion county park on the upper North Santiam just past Gates on Hwy 22. We are rehabilitating the trails and picnicking areas. We also participate in the SOLV Adopt a River program and our designated piece of the river is half of the stretch between Fishermen's Bend Park and North Santiam State Park. In October chapter members, in partnership with SOLV and the North Santiam River Guides help to clean up parks along this scenic river.
Steelheaders Salem Chapter helps host Youth Outdoor Day, Free Fishing Day, Boys & Girls Club fishing events, plus numerous activities for student anglers and especially for young conservationists. Several members of our chapter are ODFW certified Aquatic and Angler Education Program instructors and teach a course in Responsible Angling. Other members participate in brood stock spawning at ODFW's Roaring River Hatchery. The chapter also helps monitor streamside line recycling at Stayton Bridge, Mehama Bridge, John Neal Park and Fisherman's Bend.
Learn the River Trips:
Each Spring, along with the North Santiam River Guides and the North Santiam Watershed Council, the chapter co-sponsors and opportunity to "Master the Art of Running the North Santiam River". These trips provide instruction on safely running the North Santiam River from Packsaddle Park down to the Willamette River. River cleanups are often organized on these trips too. Trips start with an optional breakfast at 7:30 or 8:00 a.m. All trips meet at the boat ramp at 9:00, and vehicles are shuttled. Trips shove off in the river at 10:00 and finish around 3:00 or 4:00 p.m. Check here for dates and launch locations.
