Learning to Steelhead

Basic steelhead rigging is usually determined by the conditions and water you're planning to fish. When many of us took up steelheading we bought the following books which were very helpful:

• The bible for drift fishing is Steelhead Drift Fishing by Herzog
• For bobber and jig its Jig Fishing for Steelhead & Salmon by Vedder
• For spoon fishing its Spoon Fishing for Steelhead by Herzog
• Salmon, Trout Steelheader Magazine always has some very helpful articles

There are many more but this is where I'd start.

The best pointer we could give you is, before you by gear, go to where you plan to fish. Sit there patiently for a while and look at what the guys that are catching fish are using. Watch their presentation. If they look friendly try to make friends and they could take you under their wing.

Finally remember this - most of the lures in the store catch fishermen, not fish! Go with the proven gear buy the best you can afford. If you take good care of it it'll last a lifetime.

Good luck
