Learn to Razor Clam with the Midcoast Chapter
Check back for Bay Clamming Opportunities

A prized delicacy of the Pacific Northwest, Razor Clams are considered some of the best and require little cleaning unlike bay clams which require more time and preparation for cooking.

For the last few years members of the Midcoast chapter have held razor clamming instruction, free of charge and open to the public, at local Newport, Oregon beaches. We provide you the opportunity to follow an experienced clammer and watch what s/he is doing and learn what it means to show and neck.

We'll show you what to look for, how to dig them once you find them and then point out your first potential clam show for you to dig. Watch this video clip on how to do it. We can't dig the for you unless you have a Disabled Clam Digger Permit and a photocopy for us (bring multiple copies).

Weather Conditions
• If its sunny - we'll see you at the beach
• If its overcast - we'll see you at the beach
• If its drizzly - we'll see you at the beach
• If its raining - chances are iffy a beginner will do well
• If it's pouring or the ocean has been pounding hard we probably won't do too well - stay home

What you'll need: The Essentials

A Shellfish License. If you're 14 or older you must have one in your possession.

• Know and understand the ODFW shellfish regulations before coming to the beach.

A shovel or tube designed for razor clamming
There are a few trenching shovels that lend themselves well but, entry level razor clamming shovels are widely available at affordable prices. Those of us that razor clam often prefer the stainless models. Check Bittler Sports Center and Englund Marine Supply for tubes and the $tainless shovels. Walmart and Fred Meyers carry the cheaper disposable models that might make it through a season if you don't snap the handle. They last longer if you rinse and dry them after each clamming adventure.

A container or net to hold your clams.
Current regulations require that each clam digger must have his or her own container to put your own clams in. Don't get caught sharing a container!

Waders: You could get out there in your jeans and you're going to get cold and wet which could lead to a case of hypothermia. While we can't guarantee you won't get wet you might be able to avoid it by wearing chest waders. Boot foot waders seem to be the best. You should avoid wearing expensive wading boots if you have stocking foot waders as the sand cuts them like little razors and they won't be long for the world. Many of us wear tennis shoes from the thrift shop over our stocking foots.

A glove:
They're not called Razor's for nothing so many of us like to wear a glove on the hand that's digging. Most of us like the nice rubberized ones we get at the SOLV River Clean-ups.

Who can come...
The beach is a public place and anyone can go there! All members of the Northwest Steelheaders, regardless of chapter, and their invited guests are encouraged to let us know you're coming. If you possess a Disabled Clam Digger Permit please contact us in advance so we can meet your needs.

How to find us
Many of the beaches we frequent for razor clamming require some walking from the parking area to the actual clamming area. When you arrive at the parking lot look for our logo on the vehicles and that'll clue you that you're at the right place. Once you get out onto the beach look for a yellow sign board with a fluorescent orange X in the center.

• If you're a Northwest Steelheader please wear your Steelheaders ball cap.

Know Your Limit
Make sure you read the regulations before you get the citation. Limit is the FIRST fifteen. Absolutely no upgrading or burying of razor clams is permitted. Help avoid wastage by viewing this page

• If you see someone taking more than their limit, upgrading or handing off clams please report them to the OSP Officer or ODFW checker on the beach or in the parking lots.

Clam Safety - PSP & Domoic Acid
Make sure you check the Oregon Dept. of Agriculture, Shellfish Hotline 800-448-2474 or visit their website before heading to the beach.

Beach Safety - Sneaker Waves
Remember that weather conditions affect tidal ranges and current speeds, sometimes very strongly. Keep your eyes on the ocean. The Oregon State Parks Beach Safety web page has several video's and other information which can be very valuable on your visit to the beach - it could save your life!

For information on Bay Clamming seminars visit chapter member Bill Lackner's Digging Clams in Oregon website.

Remember, there's no bathrooms out on the beach so don't drink too much coffee before you make that long trek to the waves. Other trips on other dates are likely and information is available at chapter meetings.

Disclaimer: These are hosted, not guided/outfitted trips. You must possess an ODFW Shellfish license to dig but not to observe. All participants should take all necessary safety precautions. Please keep your eyes on the ocean and waves. Remember to obey all harvest laws. Upgrading of razor clams is illegal. Each clammer must have his/her own container for clams. More than 15 in any container will get you a citation. In the event of a Tsunami - drop your gear and RUN and yell to warn others. Get to the closest high ground you can.
