Eggs to Fry Project
There are currently four objectives being
pursued under this program by our
Chapters:
Hosting youth fishing, family fishing and guided river boat trip events for families.
- Creating educational materials, events and activities that facilitate appreciation and respect for fisheries and their habitat.
- Coordinating community involvement in river cleanup, stream bank restoration and tree planting events.
- Supporting the Egg to Fry
education program in public schools with fish
eggs, tanks and equipment.
The last highlighted bullet point is one of
the Northwest Steelheader’s signature projects
that is performed in concert with the State of
Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW).
Currently, three of the Association
chapters are actively involved with 75
metropolitan schools in Portland as the
principle sponsor (in coordination with ODFW)
of the Eggs to Fry project.
This involves nearly 1,000 students from
kindergarten to middle school. The
Chapters provide interested schools at no
charge a 40 gallon aquarium, filter, chiller
and accessory equipment along with fertilized
trout or salmon eggs as a two month
demonstration project for children to learn
about the life cycle of fish.
The Eggs to Fry Project is being expanded
for hosting by all of the Association
chapters that have the capability to
actively coordinate with schools in the
communities they serve to set up this
environmental education
project.
Specifically, each project
involves the Association’s purchase of a 30
gallon fish tank, a filtration system and pump,
a chiller, hoses/clamps/gravel and most
importantly, volunteers to help schools
setup the equipment and periodic
monitoring. For more information on how
you can participate in this project either with
a donation, volunteer time to help or a
school who might want to be involved
with this project, contact the Association
office at 503-653-4176.
